OK, in this post I would like to tell a bit about my martial arts career. I grew up in Luo Family which is known for its prowess of martial art Tanglanquan in Shandong although we later settled in Medan, Indonesia. From my young age, Grandpa and Dad taught me our family style kungfu and expect me as the heir of the art. As that time, in Suharto's era, Chinese teachings were forbidden, in order to hide our style, Dad sent me to a Hapkido school. I stopped my Hapkido training in 2012 after I gained the 1st Dan because we have to move to Magelang, Central Java.
As I arrived in Magelang about 4 years ago, I start my training in Nanquan with Shifu Polaris. He taught me the basics of contemporary Wushu with the simple Wubuquan (5 Stances Fist), well it took me the whole month to master the basics of that fist. Slow but sure, we moved to Nanquan, here Shifu told me about the Hung Ga and Wuzuquan. It is a lot harder to master since there are tons of difficult movements that we have to perform. After finishing the sets, Shifu taught me the basis of Southern Broadsword and Southern Cudgel. Excelling in these style, Shifu give me the a black belt (1st Duan) in Nanquan after 2 years full of practice (which is cut short because my martial arts basic is more than enough).
Here in Magelang, Shifu Polaris introcuced me to the master of Shaolinquan, Shifu Aria. He introduced me about the traditional fist of Shaolinquan. Shifu Polaris and Shifu Aria taught me a lot about the fist until they were busy with marriage and works. Since I felt that my wushu skills are not good enough, Shifu sent me to study with their teacher, Master Liem. Master Liem is the master of Shaolinquan and held a 9th degree black belt in Shorinji Kempo. The Master was satisfied with my basics and ancestry and he acknowledge me as his foster-son, thereby, the heir of his teachings since none of his sons have the will to study the art. Master Liem is a Shaolinquan master who keeps his art in secrecy. I am still trained by him now. Master Liem also introduced me to his friend, Master Tan who is the master of Zheng style Taijiquan and held a 1st Dan in Kodokan Judo.
Master Tan also felt satisfied with my backgrounds and made me one of the three candidate who will be acknowledge as the rightful heir of the art. These training actually have to be stopped in 2014 since I have to pursue my study in Yogyakarta. I was accepted in Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta and thereby have to leave Magelang for sure. One of my Vice-Dean, Sensei Edu holds 4th Dan in Aikikai, and he decided to teach me the Aikido. I don't really pursue a degree in martial arts since it's does not mean much. Sensei feels the same so he taught me without the need of formal agreements with any organization.
I would like to thank these masters since they shaped me into a martial artist. Although I am focusing myself in Tanglanquan, their teachings helped me a lot in order to polish my family style.
